A disruptive change is a move to something qualitatively different. The earth revolves around the sun, not vice-versa. Semiconductors instead of transistors. Separate facilities are not equal. Such transformations often look great in retrospect, but when they first emerge may be less effective than what preceded them. Conceiving a disruptive change is only the beginning. Bringing Big Ideas to their full potential requires tremendous implementation and a lot of hard work.

A sustaining change refines and improves an existing process, probably incrementally. Incandescent bulbs burn longer and longer. Silicon chips crunch faster and faster. Of course, work on such improvement might incorrectly assume that the underlying system is correct. Figuring out more and more epicycles to improve the geocentric almagests accuracy in predicting conjunctions for the royal astrologer never questions that maybe the earth isnt actually the center of everything. What youre working to improve might not be sustainable over the long term.

The ability to grow, change, and advance is our competitive advantage as humans. Making both disruptive and sustaining changes are necessary. Improvement is always needed. So is judging when youve got it all wrong and there must be a better way.

So let 2005 be disruptive or sustaining as your needs require. Id say that I hope the year brings you growth, but really, I hope that you bring growth to the year. May you effect positive change both within your own life and in the world around you.
